Director of Hong Kong Observatory Elected Vice Chair of WMO Infrastructure Commission

HONG KONG, April 19 (Xinhua) - According to a statement from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government Information Services Department on the 19th, Mr. Shun Chi-ming, Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, was elected by a high margin as one of the Vice Chairs of the Infrastructure Commission of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) at its third session held in Geneva, Switzerland on the 18th. The Infrastructure Commission is one of the two technical commissions of the World Meteorological Organization, assisting in the development and implementation of globally coordinated Earth system observation, data, and prediction systems. It also advises the Executive Council and the highest decision-making body of the WMO, the World Meteorological Congress, on international standards for methods, procedures, techniques, and operational practices in meteorological and hydrological services, to be incorporated into technical regulations, guidelines, and manuals.

Chen Pui-wai expressed his deep honor at being appointed as Co-Vice Chair of the Infrastructure Commission, stating, "I am grateful for the support of the Central People's Government and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government for my work in the Infrastructure Commission. Looking ahead, I will do my utmost to work hand in hand with experts from the technical commissions to achieve the common goal of protecting lives and property through science and innovation."

The World Meteorological Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for weather, climate, water, and related environmental matters. Currently, the WMO has 187 member countries and six member territories, including Hong Kong, China. The Hong Kong Observatory has been actively involved in the work of the World Meteorological Organization for many years, and Chen Pui-wai is currently the Permanent Representative of Hong Kong, China, to the World Meteorological Organization.
