On March 20th, news broke out that a Chinese-American blogger had brought three-wheeled vehicles (commonly known as "tuk-tuks") to the US from China. Their practicality and usability quickly made them a viral hit as a local mode of transportation.
Inspired by the popularity of the tuk-tuks online, a young man from Guizhou living in the US decided to venture into a new business.
He teamed up with two friends and ordered the three-wheelers from China, shipping them directly to customers in the US.
To their surprise, the tuk-tuks became a sensation among American customers, with many placing orders immediately after hearing the price. The Guizhou native's business venture generated sales of $10,000 on its first day.
The businessman expressed his ambition to make Chinese tuk-tuks a national phenomenon in the US and grow his enterprise into a formidable force.
It was recently reported that the "Chinese tuk-tuks" that went viral online were electric three-wheelers manufactured by Jiangsu Guo Wei Motorcycle.
Guo Wei Motorcycle's founder, Ni Xiaofeng, stated that the surge in popularity of Chinese tuk-tuks overseas had resulted in a significant increase in online orders from abroad. Previously, Guo Wei exported only around one to two hundred electric three-wheelers per month; however, that figure has now climbed to nearly six hundred orders.
While the price range of these electric three-wheelers in China is between 3,000 and 6,000 RMB, the cost doubles after factoring in shipping and customs fees once they are exported. Despite this, they remain in high demand among foreign customers.
Before the Chinese Lunar New Year, Guo Wei contacted the local government in the area where the viral videos were shot to discuss the possibility of establishing a manufacturing plant in the region in addition to expanding their partnership.
