On May 12th, it was reported that the China Passenger Car Association released the domestic car sales data for April. In April, the retail sales of narrow passenger cars in China reached 1.532 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 5.7% and a month-on-month decrease of 9.4%. The cumulative sales from January to April totaled 6.364 million units, an 8.0% year-on-year increase.
In terms of the April car sales ranking, Japanese and German joint venture brands experienced a significant decline in sales, while only domestic car manufacturers saw a remarkable surge.
BYD sold 254,131 vehicles in April, ranking first among domestic car companies with a significant year-on-year increase of 31.1%, expanding its market share to 16.6%.
FAW-Volkswagen sold 119,032 vehicles in April, ranking second, with a 15.6% year-on-year decrease, widening the gap with BYD to less than half of its sales.
Geely Auto ranked third, selling 115,723 vehicles in April, with a substantial year-on-year increase of 31.2%, trailing FAW-Volkswagen by just over 3,000 vehicles.
Changan Auto sold 82,630 vehicles in April, ranking fourth, with a 17.9% year-on-year decline, being the only domestic car company in the top ten list to experience a decrease in sales.
Chery Auto sold 79,456 vehicles, ranking fifth with a remarkable year-on-year increase of 59.8%, marking the highest growth rate among the listed companies.
As for the sixth to tenth positions, they are held by SAIC Volkswagen, GAC Toyota, Dongfeng Nissan, FAW Toyota, and Brilliance BMW, representing Japanese and German joint venture brands.
Notably, GAC Toyota saw a 32.1% decline in sales, marking the largest decrease among the listed brands, while FAW Toyota also experienced a 31.3% drop in sales. For Toyota in China, the significant simultaneous decline in sales for both major brands is quite rare.
