Public records show that in December 1916, the renowned educator and thinker Cai Yuanpei took office as the president of Peking University and implemented highly effective reforms.

Cai believed that universities should serve as institutions for advanced scholarly research. He took a series of measures to enhance Peking University's research standards, such as establishing research institutes and nurturing graduate students.

By the end of 1917, Peking University had established research institutes for literature, science, and law, making them the earliest academic research institutions in Chinese universities at that time. By early 1918, there were a total of 148 researchers (i.e., graduate students) and 32 associate researchers in various institutes.

After the reforms, Peking University flourished academically, gaining increasing reputation and attracting a surge in the number of faculty and students. According to statistics from 1918, there were 217 faculty members, including 90 professors, and 1980 students, with 148 of them being graduate students.

In this favorable academic environment, a large number of outstanding talents emerged, and pioneering works in various disciplines were successively published. s_169f1961776c4bd5828dac7f2f22ec45.jpg
