Recently, at the "Shine 2024 Conference" held in Kunming, the Examination Department of the British Council shared extensive data on IELTS test takers' performance in Mainland China in 2023, along with core insights into study abroad trends.

This presentation, based on official research and the vast database of Chinese IELTS candidates, focused on the performance of 2023 IELTS test takers in Mainland China. It analyzed various dimensions such as provinces, cities, universities, and high schools, aiming to provide insights for professionals in the international education industry and English education practitioners, facilitating lifelong growth for Chinese international talents from academics to employment.

The analysis revealed that overseas educational resources, enriching life experiences, enhancing competitiveness in job applications, and improving overall personal qualities are the top three factors driving Chinese students to study abroad. When selecting a study destination, they emphasize factors such as educational and research strength, social recognition, school rankings, and competitiveness in future employment.

As for study destinations, the UK remains the top choice for Chinese students and continues to maintain its leading position, with a noticeable trend of applying to multi-country programs with the UK at the core.

Furthermore, nearly sixty percent of academic IELTS test takers in Mainland China scored 6.0 or above, showing an upward trend in scores across provinces, cities, and universities. However, the average total score for Chinese academic IELTS test takers still falls within the range of 5.5 to 6.5. Among the top 30 "world-class universities and disciplines" participating in the construction initiative, the test scores of their candidates all ranked in the 6.5 band or above.
