Beijing Huairou Science City Releases a Batch of Major Achievements, Extending Invitations to the World

Beijing, April 28 (Xinhua) - The Meridian Project has completed the world's largest space environment ground-based comprehensive monitoring network, brought the high-energy synchrotron radiation light source closer to being the "brightest light source" by emitting its first beam of light, independently developed an internationally advanced extreme condition material property measurement system and ultra-fast spherical aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope, and created a brain cognitive function map and cross-research platform for brain-like intelligence, constructing the brain-like cognitive intelligence engine "BrainCog"...

As one of the parallel forums of the 2024 Zhongguancun Forum, the National Major Science and Technology Infrastructure Open Sharing Forum and the Huairou Comprehensive National Science Center (also known as Huairou Science City) Major Achievements Release Conference was held on April 28. It unveiled a series of major scientific research achievements of the Huairou Comprehensive National Science Center's large scientific instruments and technological facilities platform, and extended a warm invitation to scientists worldwide through an "invitation."

The major achievements announced on that day include: the Meridian Project has completed the world's largest space environment ground-based comprehensive monitoring network. One of its Phase II landmark equipment, the circular array solar radio imaging telescope, is currently the largest in the world and has the best imaging performance in the same frequency band among comprehensive aperture radio imaging telescopes internationally. The high-energy synchrotron radiation light source amplifier has successfully emitted beams, marking the completion of the light source injector construction task, advancing the accelerator construction into a crucial stage, and getting closer to emitting the first beam of light from the "brightest light source." The comprehensive extreme condition experimental device has undergone trial operation and achieved key core technological breakthroughs, independently developing an internationally advanced extreme condition material property measurement system and ultra-fast spherical aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope.

Simultaneously, major technological achievements in scientific and educational infrastructure and cross-research platforms are accelerating, supporting collaborative innovation: the brain cognitive function map and cross-research platform have created the brain-like cognitive intelligence engine "BrainCog," providing a new set of universal basic components for brain-like intelligence and computational neuroscience researchers; the deep resource detection technology equipment research platform has built China's first intelligent drilling system "module-instrument-system" full chain, systematic research and development testing platform, promoting the research and development of China's intelligent drilling equipment; the high-performance klystron developed by the large scientific instrument high-power high-reliability klystron research platform is driving the development of core components of China's large scientific instruments.

At the forum, Lin Jianhua, Deputy Secretary of the Party Group and Deputy Director of the Beijing Development and Reform Commission, introduced the progress of the construction of 10 science and technology facility platforms in operation in Huairou Science City, the direction of supporting research areas, and the open operation situation, inviting users worldwide to make reservations for use.

He stated that currently, the comprehensive extreme condition experimental device, the Earth system numerical simulation device, the multimodal cross-scale biomedical imaging facility, the material genomics research platform, the clean energy material testing diagnosis and research platform, the advanced carrier and measurement technology comprehensive experimental platform, the advanced light source technology research and testing platform, the space science satellite series and effective payload research and development testing support platform, the International Meridian Circle Large Science Plan Headquarters, and the space astronomy and application research and development experimental platform are all fully open and operating well. Next, Huairou Science City will further strengthen operational management, promote more facility platforms to open and share globally, and make greater contributions to Beijing's construction of an international science and technology innovation center and the acceleration of the development of new quality productive forces.

The keynote speech section of the forum was chaired by Academician Wang Chi, Director of the National Space Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Academician Wu Yirong, Director of the Aerospace Information Innovation Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Wang Yifang, Director of the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Academician Fang Zhong, Director of the Energy and Climate Research Institute of the Helmholtz Association, Germany, Senior Advisor Chong Shen of the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Researcher Su Dong of the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences respectively introduced the construction and operation experience of the scientific and technological facility platforms, sharing relevant cases of research results produced based on these platforms. Hu Shaofeng, Director of the Science Policy and Basic Science Section of the Natural Sciences Sector of UNESCO, shared insights on advancing basic science research through sharing scientific infrastructure, laboratories, and equipment.

This National Major Science and Technology Infrastructure Open Sharing Forum, themed "International Cooperation and Open Sharing," was organized by the National Development and Reform Commission, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Beijing Municipal People's Government, with the support of the High-tech Department of the National Development and Reform Commission, the Science Communication Bureau of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Science and Technology Innovation Development Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Beijing Development and Reform Commission, the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and the Huairou Science City Management Committee. The forum also invited representatives from over 100 research institutions and enterprises to attend, allowing them to have a close look at and understand the major scientific and technological infrastructure of Huairou Science City, and organized three special discussions on topics such as the research progress of the comprehensive extreme condition experimental device, the open sharing of the high-energy synchrotron radiation light source, and the development of the life science industry in Huairou Science City, promoting the integrated development of the innovation chain and industrial chain.

It is understood that since the approval of the "Beijing Huairou Comprehensive National Science Center Construction Plan" in 2017, after nearly 7 years of effort, it has become one of the regions with the most complete national strategic scientific and technological strength system and the highest density of major scientific and technological infrastructure in the country. In addition to the 37 science and technology facility platforms already established, it has also gathered one national laboratory, three new research and development institutions, a group of leading scientific and technological enterprises, as well as 21 affiliated units of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and high-level research-oriented universities such as the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, with 23,000 researchers in the city. In the future, Huairou Science City will further promote the construction, operation, and open sharing of national major science and technology infrastructure with greater efforts, promote deep integration of global innovation entities, accelerate the creation of a world-class original innovation carrier zone, and drive the development of new quality productive forces.
