AMD Fulfills Open Source Promise by Releasing Full MES Documentation for RDNA 3 GPU

Mon, May 13 2024 08:06 PM EST

AMD has finally delivered on its promise by releasing the complete documentation for the Micro Engine Scheduler (MES) firmware of the RDNA 3 GPU. We still remember how the well-known startup TinyGrad fought with AMD on the internet, simply because AMD was against open-sourcing resources, ultimately leading the AI startup to switch to alternatives from companies like NVIDIA and Intel.

However, this did drive some changes in how AMD handles its software assets, with the company shifting towards open source to some extent, as evidenced by the latest MES documentation initiative. In the document, AMD states:

In addition to MES, AMD has also announced its intention to open source other parts of its software stack and hardware documentation. ?url=http%3A%2F%2Fdingyue.ws.126.net%2F2024%2F0512%2F1b8e5a7bj00sdbwo700edd000hs00mug.jpg&thumbnail=660x2147483647&quality=80&type=jpg

If the company continues on this development trajectory, it will mark the beginning of a new era.
