On March 16-17, a series of academic events, titled "Perpetuating the Spirit of Scientist Min Enze," were held in Beijing to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Academician Min Enze's birth. Over 200 experts and scholars in the field of energy and chemical engineering, including several academicians, gathered to discuss academic matters, exchange ideas, and pay tribute to the renowned Chinese petroleum and chemical expert, Academician Min Enze, in order to promote the spirit of scientists in the new era.
Min Enze, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and a recipient of the highest national science and technology award, is hailed as a pioneer in petroleum refining catalysis and a trailblazer in green chemistry, having made outstanding contributions to the development of China's energy and chemical industry.
The series of academic events were organized by Sinopec (China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation), with co-sponsorship from Sinopec Research Institute of Petroleum and Petrochemicals, the Chemistry Division of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Department of Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the National Key Laboratory of Molecular Catalysis and Reaction Engineering for Petrochemical Industry. The events included the Academic Forum on Promoting the Spirit of Scientist Min Enze and the Youth Academic Symposium.
In his address, Academician and Chairman of Sinopec, Ma Yongsheng, expressed that Min Enze's dedication and spirit are deeply moving and inspiring. He emphasized Min's infinite love for the motherland, his lifelong dedication to national development and the people's needs. Ma highlighted Min's outstanding contributions to the energy and chemical industry in China and his role in nurturing a large number of technical elites. As professionals in the energy and chemical industry, Ma urged everyone to draw strength from Min Enze's journey and to advance the green energy and chemical industry pioneered by him, thus illuminating the new era with the spirit of scientists.
Academician and Secretary-General of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chen Jianfeng, stated that as scientists and technologists, it is our responsibility to accelerate the creation of new productive forces, build a modern industrial system, and advance China's unique modernization. He emphasized the importance of scientific and industrial innovation, as well as talent support, and called for the promotion of the scientist's spirit under the inspiration of Min Enze's patriotic spirit of "putting the nation first and the cause foremost". Chen stressed the importance of adhering to green and intelligent directions to contribute to national energy security, industrial chain security, and the high-quality development of the petrochemical industry.
Wang Du-jin, Director of the Bureau of Academy Affairs of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, remarked that Min Enze was a stalwart and outstanding strategic scientist in the field of petroleum and chemical technology in China. During his tenure as the leader of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Min made significant contributions to supporting the Academy in fulfilling its role as the highest advisory body for national science and technology. To better showcase the lofty ideals, innovative scientific spirit, rigorous scholarly style, and selfless attitude towards fame and fortune of the academic community, the Chinese Academy of Sciences launched the "Scientific Life·Centennial" thematic publicity campaign in 2017. This activity aims to systematically display the scientific achievements and life styles of centenarian or centennial academicians through a variety of forms such as text, pictures, physical exhibitions, and documentaries. This year, coinciding with the centennial or centennial birthday of dozens of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Bureau will also organize an "Academic Life·Centennial Academicians Exhibition," which includes lectures on the scientific spirit of Min Enze.
The opening ceremony featured a documentary on the life of Min Enze. Subsequently, nine academicians and experts, including Zhang Tao, Bao Xinhao, He Mingyuan, Xie Zaiku, Chen Jianfeng, Xu Nanping, Cao Xianghong, Tan Tianwei, and Li Mingfeng, delivered keynote speeches, focusing on key paths for the future development of the energy and chemical industry such as single-atom catalysis, molecular chemical engineering, material science and technology innovation, and bio-manufacturing in the petrochemical industry, to engage in academic exchanges and share innovative insights, providing suggestions and ideas for leading and promoting high-quality development of the energy and chemical industry.
On March 17, the Youth Academic Symposium on Promoting the Spirit of Scientist Min Enze was held, where representatives of past winners of the Min Enze Energy and Chemical Engineering Award, Min Enze Youth Science and Technology Talent Award, and 22 outstanding young scholars from institutions such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, and research institutions presented academic reports, focusing on topics such as efficient conversion of biomass for the preparation of important chemicals and cellulose ethanol technology.
