Researchers from the Department of Chemistry at Xi'an Jiaotong University, led by Professor Shujiang Ding, have developed a unique iodide ionic liquid as a positive electrode material for zinc ion batteries, achieving both high areal capacity and excellent cycling stability of the iodine cathode. This study, which emphasizes for the first time the influence of intrinsic conductivity of halogen electrode materials on battery properties, has recently been published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

It is reported that the ionic liquid positive electrode material exhibits an excellent mass and charge transfer capability, resulting in a conductivity four orders of magnitude higher than that of pure iodine. Additionally, the highly hydrophobic nature of the ionic liquid positive electrode significantly reduces its shuttle effect. Based on these outstanding properties, the assembled zinc-iodine battery demonstrates stable cycling for over 990 hours at a high areal capacity of 3 mAh cm^-2 and can cycle stably for more than 4000 times at high rates.

Furthermore, flexible batteries designed and prepared based on this liquid positive electrode material can not only achieve high-voltage operation through circuit design but also maintain stable cycling under a unique polarity reversal mode.
