A Blast from 20 Years Ago: AMD RX 8000 Graphics Card Gets Its First Codename

In a surprising twist reminiscent of two decades past, the core codename for AMD's next-generation RDNA4 architecture graphics card has surfaced within the AMD ROCm development software. Dubbed "NV48," or Navi 48, it marks a nostalgic resonance with NVIDIA's history.

Interestingly, NVIDIA had previously utilized the "NV48" codename back in 2004, corresponding to the GeForce 6800 series graphics cards. This convergence of codenames echoes a cyclic pattern, adding a touch of intrigue to the ever-evolving landscape of GPU technology. s_0cb287cc69c5406fa4c5e2289a9adfff.jpg The AMD RDNA4 RX 8000 series is stepping away from the flagship competition, steering clear of monsters like NVIDIA's GB202, focusing solely on the mid-to-low range. There might just be two distinct GPU cores in the lineup, with the larger one being the Navi 48, expected to sport 32 sets of WGP. The smaller one, rumored to be named NV44 or Navi 44, is anticipated to feature 20 sets of WGP.

Both of these are speculated to potentially support PCIe 5.0 and GDDR7 memory, akin to NVIDIA's RTX 50 series, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Aside from the brand-new RDNA4, AMD is also gearing up for a transitional RDNA3+, slated for integration into the next-gen Zen5 architecture for mobile platforms. s_3006fce79ab147838725c1fdde4cc4bf.png
