On April 21st, the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences unveiled "China's Major Medical Advances of 2023" at the 2024 China Medical Development Conference, featuring a total of 43 research breakthroughs. These include 10 in clinical medicine, 2 in dentistry, 12 in basic medicine and biology, 5 in pharmacy, 7 in public health and environmental sciences, and 7 in biomedical engineering and information fields.
According to Wang Jianwei, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Secretary General of the Academic Advisory Committee of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, the "Important Medical Advances in China in 2023" focuses on significant achievements made by Chinese scholars in 2023, which may have important current and future impacts and possess high international attention or application potential. The selection adopts a quantitative technical route combining multidimensional quantification with broad content evaluation, with quantitative calculation as the main method and qualitative analysis as supplementary. Unbiased inclusion of data from multiple sources is used to establish a candidate achievement database, including medical research papers published by Chinese scholars in 2023, domestically approved pharmaceutical products, and domestically approved innovative medical devices, with a cumulative collection of data exceeding 330,000 entries. Based on this, the research team from the Institute of Medical Information of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences conducted quantitative calculations to form a list of candidate achievements for the "Important Medical Advances in China in 2023," which was submitted for review by all members of the academic committee and approved by the executive committee, with a final selection of 43 significant advances.
In the selection of the "Important Medical Advances in China in 2023," the research team constructed an evaluation system based on key analysis indicators reflecting the academic influence, peer recognition, and special attention of the achievements, in accordance with the development laws of "big medicine" and the characteristics of medical science and technology achievements.
