String of Fires Prompt Call for National Mandatory Standards for Electric Bicycle Batteries

On March 4th, it was reported that electric bicycles have become a crucial means of transportation for many due to their economic and convenient features.

However, in recent years, there has been a surge in fire accidents involving electric bicycles, largely attributed to incidents such as indoor charging, unauthorized modifications, lithium battery short circuits, and unsafe charging practices.

Statistics show that in 2023, there were 21,000 incidents of electric bicycle fires nationwide, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced safety management of electric bicycles.

According to a report from CCTV News, National People's Congress delegate Jin Buhuan's research revealed that the primary safety concerns with electric bicycles lie in their batteries and charging systems.

The existing battery standards for electric bicycles are mostly local technical standards, with some companies producing products based on their own standards, which often fall far below the recommended national or industry standards.

To address this issue, he proposed two key suggestions:

  1. Accelerate the formulation of standards, recommending that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology promptly introduce national mandatory standards for lithium-ion batteries used in electric bicycles.

  2. Strengthen the construction of charging facilities, suggesting that the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development incorporate electric bicycle charging facilities into the planning of residential supporting facilities.

It is understood that due to many components of electric bicycles being made of plastic materials, once ignited, they can quickly combust.

Ninety seconds after ignition, the temperature can reach 200°C, and the toxic gases produced by the burning of an electric bicycle are sufficient to cause suffocation and death to hundreds of people. s_7ddca01074c741c5be74a07337b7cdc1.png
