On February 24th, the 2024 Tengchong Scientist Forum Academy Lecture, themed "Healthy China, Innovative Approaches to Hot Spring Medical Care and Health Preservation," was jointly hosted by the Tengchong Scientist Forum Center, Tengchong Municipal People's Government, Wenzhou Medical University, Kunming Medical University, and other institutions in Tengchong, Yunnan. More than 150 guests, including academicians such as Li Xiaokun from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Zhu Weimo from the American Academy of Sports Science, Li Xinmin from the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, Li Tao, Dean of the China Institute of Social Governance at Beijing Normal University, and Professor Luo Lin from the School of Physical Education at Guizhou Normal University, as well as representatives from government agencies, business circles, and healthcare practitioners, gathered to discuss new perspectives and development prospects for the hot spring medical and health industry in the construction of a Healthy China.
In his address, Zhang Zhuoya, member of the Standing Committee of the Tengchong Municipal Committee and Deputy Mayor, stated that Tengchong boasts abundant hot spring resources. He expressed the hope that academicians and experts would provide strong support for technological innovation and academic strength in the development of the hot spring medical and health industry, aiming to create a distinctive and characteristic health brand with the unique features of Tengchong's hot springs. During the "Academic Roundtable Dialogue" segment, host Mr. Zhu Weizhong engaged in discussions with academic experts on several topics including "What is depression and anxiety," "How to diagnose depression and anxiety," "How to treat depression and anxiety," and "Effective remedies for treating depression and anxiety: exercise, positive thinking, diet, and sleep."
Academician Li Xiaokun emphasized in his remarks that psychiatric disorders should not be treated with medication blindly. Instead, treatment plans should be tailored according to the individual circumstances of the patients, identifying the root causes of their depression and anxiety, and providing personalized solutions. It is crucial to consider social, familial, and educational factors comprehensively. He particularly stressed the importance of instilling mental strength in children to help them avoid depression and anxiety. Additionally, he suggested promoting the development of hot spring medical rehabilitation to benefit millions of people. Academician Zhu Weimao provided on-site guidance to guests on proper exercise, allowing them to experience the charm of physical activity. Abundant research has shown that "hot springs + exercise" not only benefits physical fitness but also has positive effects on mental and physical health.
Academician Li Xinmin explained from the perspective of molecular medicine the impact of hot springs on people's thinking, sensation, and cognition, thus elucidating the principles behind alleviating depression and anxiety.
Director Li Tao believes that the hot springs medical and health industry has tremendous potential in addressing people's mental health issues, and calls for strengthened policy guidance and coordinated industry development. Professor Rowling shared her experience of overcoming depression, demonstrating that exercising in comfortably warm water can greatly enhance one's sense of comfort and security, playing a crucial role in rehabilitation.
During the interactive session, Dr. Lu Jiahai, Dean of the School of Laboratory Medicine (College of Life Sciences) at Wenzhou Medical University, expressed the hope to create a new model in Tengchong based on psychology, prevention, and rehabilitation, to promote the construction of a Healthy China. The recent Academician Lecture Series has provided valuable insights and momentum for the development of the hot spring medical care and wellness industry through the sharing and exchange of ideas among academicians, experts, and scholars. Their insights and experiences have not only enriched the knowledge system in the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of depression and anxiety but also charted new directions for hot spring medical care and wellness, contributing to the realization of the Healthy China initiative.
