On March 1st, reports from foreign media indicate that the United States has made an outrageous resolution, making it nearly impossible for cars produced by Chinese manufacturers to be sold in the US market in the short term.
Prior to this resolution, Republican Senator Hawley had proposed a bill to increase import tariffs on Chinese cars. Hawley's bill would raise the basic tariff from the current 2.5% to 100%, implying that the total tax rate on all cars imported from China would increase from the current 27.5% to 125%.
Furthermore, he also seeks to impose a 100% tariff on cars assembled in Mexico by Chinese car manufacturers.
Hawley argues that the United States should take measures to protect American auto workers from the "survival threat" posed by China. The American Manufacturing Advocacy Organization is also urging President Biden to prevent low-cost Chinese cars and components from Mexico.
This move has sparked heated discussions among netizens. Some express disappointment, questioning the fairness of the situation. Others suggest banning Tesla and Apple, arguing that Chinese companies are unlikely to enter the US market. They propose allowing Chinese enterprises to develop and dominate markets outside the US first, without providing any opportunities for the US to flourish in the Chinese market.
