High Commission: Netflix Completely Halts Apple App Store Payment Method!

Wed, Feb 28 2024 08:35 PM EST

On February 27th, reports emerged stating that Netflix has added new content to its help website, indicating that members who pay through the Apple App Store will soon receive notifications prompting them to change their payment method.

Those who fail to add a new payment method outside of the Apple App Store before their monthly renewal date will no longer be able to use their Netflix accounts. To continue using Netflix's services, they must add a new payment method.

Furthermore, Netflix will no longer offer billing through Apple for new members.

This policy change is expected to affect members using Netflix's basic plan in countries like the United States and Canada.

This shift is poised to detach Netflix from Apple's payment system, thereby eliminating the need to pay Apple a certain percentage of revenue. s_1822f4325b6c40ddb13c84fb9f0de485.jpg Recently, Apple announced that it would open up third-party app stores in the European Union region. EU users will be able to download apps through third-party channels, commonly referred to as sideloading.

While the channels for downloading apps have opened up, Apple has not completely relaxed its stance on fees.

In a press release, Apple stated that the commission for transactions of digital goods and services distributed through the App Store will be reduced to 10% or 17%.

Apple anticipates that under the new commercial terms, 99% of developers will be able to reduce the fees they pay to Apple.

However, Apple also requires developers to pay a "core technology fee." Once an iOS app exceeds 1 million installations, developers need to pay 0.50 euros per first installation annually.
