The epicenter is located 24 kilometers away from Akqi County, 68 kilometers from Wushi County, and 812 kilometers from Urumqi City. The area around the epicenter is sparsely populated, yet the earthquake caused strong tremors in the surrounding areas.
Netizens from Aksu, Yili, Kashgar, and Wushi in Xinjiang reported feeling strong tremors. A resident from Aksu mentioned that the earthquake caused ceiling lamps to sway and induced dizziness.
The China Earthquake Networks Center quickly reported that the 5.8 magnitude earthquake in Akqi was the strongest aftershock of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Wushi, Xinjiang, to date, with the epicenters of the two quakes being 22 kilometers apart.
It's reported that the 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Wushi, Xinjiang, occurred on January 23 at 02:09, with the epicenter located in Wushi County, Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang (41.26°N latitude and 78.63°E longitude), at a depth of 22 kilometers.
